Escape to the country…
…has Covid prompted us to wonder if the grass is greener…?
For decades the pace of house price growth in the UK’s cities far outweighed that of rural areas. That all changed in 2020, as the world changed pace in the face of a global pandemic.
As the orders came to stay at home, suddenly we were prizing space more than anything – outdoors and indoors. Those with sizable gardens and access to rural countryside to explore were looked at enviously by those stuck in apartments with perhaps not even a balcony.
But as people started to realise they could work from home, and ditching the commute might become a permanent reality, property seekers decided that moving to the country was a realistic prospect. Especially when many places had lower property prices than those in major cities, for more space. Research reveals that, post-pandemic, 44 per cent of Brits now find the prospect of living in urban areas less appealing than they did before.
So, has there been a permanent shift in the appeal of city living?
The Telegraph reported last month that the number of people moving out of London was slowing, so maybe the appeal of living in the countryside doesn’t seem so obvious now things are opening up again and the city’s amenities and entertainment are available again. Certainly, there have been stories in the press of people who swapped London life for a rural idyl and found it not so idyllic (for them) after all.
