Before the move


When to move?

We suggest times other than summer or end of the month. Those times are the busiest for us. However, we do realise that there many factors that decide when you move and that you have no choice. We are dedicated to planning a move that will accommodate your individual needs.

When to contact a removals company

We suggest four to six weeks prior to your move date. The earlier we are advised of your move the easier it will be to accommodate your dates and times. There are many other things that you must remember you to do and arrange, such as:

  • Final meter readings for electricity, gas telephones
  • Re-directing mail
  • Tradesman to disconnect fittings such as lights or cookers, or dismantle garden shed, etc
  • Planning travel/overnight accommodation

Do I need an estimate or quotation?

Yes, this allows for a pre-move survey of your household goods that need to be moved. This will then enable you to budget your moving costs.

Am I protected against loss or damage?

There are a number of Insurance arrangements possible. You need to ensure that you have the right cover for you



What happens when a Surveyor comes to your home?

The surveyor will arrive at your home to complete a full visual survey of your household items. Once this is completed, they will calculate the cubic capacity, packing costs and other charges related to your move. Please remember to provide an accurate survey they must be able to see everything that you wish to move. Attics and Closets can be deceiving – so organise your home before they arrive. Please do not be alarmed if they look in cupboards and drawers, under beds and on top of wardrobes as they will need to see everything to ensure what needs packing is packed. If you know of any items that are not on view, be certain to let them know. Please also advise if there are any items that are not to be moved. Otherwise there may not be enough space for your shipment. This will not occur on one or two items, but if you anticipate taking large furniture at the last minute the driver may run out of space.

Will you advice us on the easiest way of undertaking the whole project?

Of course, and we are delighted to help. With over 85 years of experience there aren’t too many problems we have not met and overcome before. What’s more, we will provide a free quotation tailored to your needs and budget.

For example, Holdsworth’s can pack everything, only breakables or nothing (providing you with boxes to pack yourself), it’s your choice. We can also advise on ‘specialist packing’ such as antiques, pictures or items of sentimental value.

Packing Services


Should I pack or have my effects packed for me?

The largest percentage of damages caused during a removal is due to incorrectly packed or inadequate strength cartons used. We, as a professional removal company, recommend our staff attend to your packing. This will alleviate a lot of the stress. By going down this path you also do not compromise your Insurance. If you wish to do the packing yourself, we can supply sufficient packing materials.

Owner packed or (PBO) (Packed by Owner) is quite acceptable, but we recommend you follow a few simple rules:-

Books and other heavy items should only be packed in sturdy cartons. Tea chest size cartons for the majority of other items. Spread the weight and fill the carton to the top even if crushed paper is used to fill the carton – this ensure that the carton will not be collapse or be crushed.

What does a full household pack consist of?

If you purchase a full packing service then as the name suggests we will pack everything that requires packing. The only area you will have to accommodate yourself is perishable food and opened packets/jars/tins/bottles and to remove any fixtures and fitting that you wish to take with you. There is no need to purchase a china and glass pack in addition. This service does not include the dismantling or reassembly of furniture.

What does a china and glass pack consist of?

This service is aimed at clients who wish to have their breakables professionally packed for safe transit. Any items that would smash if dropped such as ornaments, plates, cups saucers, pictures and mirrors are accommodated by this service.

Do you provide an unpacking service as standard?

This is included within our full packing quotation as standard. Holdsworth’s removal team will assist with unpacking on the removal day.

If your Holdsworth’s crew is unpacking, your items will be placed onto flat surfaces so you can decide where you will eventually place the items in your new home.
